How to Calculate Bitumen and Asphalt Paving
In civil engineering and road paving, determining material volume and weight accurately is essential for logistical planning and budgeting. Pavement construction consists of **asphalt hot mix**, which is roughly 95% mineral aggregate (sand, stone, gravel) and 5% **liquid bitumen binder** (the black petroleum glue).
Standard Asphalt Density
Asphalt mixes have variable densities depending on compaction levels and aggregate types. The standard density parameters for estimation are:
- Imperial Units: Compacted hot-mix asphalt (HMA) density is usually estimated at **145 to 150 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/cu ft)**, which is approximately **2.0 to 2.1 tons per cubic yard (cu yd)**.
- Metric Units: Compacted asphalt density is estimated at **2.3 to 2.4 metric tonnes per cubic meter (t/m3)**.
